  • Jeff Halper - Flagstone Patio  By : Jeff Halper
And nothing enhances the look of a patio better than flagstone. A flagstone patio denotes hardiness, security, wherewithal and permanence. With its bluish coloring, flagstone also conveys a cool beauty, particularly welcoming during our hot summer months. A flagstone patio sends a powerful visual message.
  • Jeff Halper - River Oaks Stepping Stone Patio  By : Jeff Halper
Stepping stone patios of all sorts are common in landscape design. They are at all difficult to construct. However, creating a french drainage system can often be a challenge depending on the constituency of the soil. Water can create mud between stones and on accumulate on their surfaces, making it unpleasant to walk across the patio after a rain. To make such a structure work as a pool patio, it was necessary for us to build a concealed drainage system underneath the stone elements and use organic material to conceal it.
  • Jeff Halper - Garden Water Fountain  By : Jeff Halper
We began our work by constructing a garden water fountain at the very end of a brand new swimming pool the Turner’s had just had installed. We built the basin in the shape of distorted figure-8 that bent to the left and right of what would ultimately become a walkway over the water. We used a gunite concrete substructure that would seal the basin and keep it waterproof, and then we concealed the top of the concrete with a decorative stone-clad overlay whose blue-gray color complimented that of the home.
  • Jeff Halper - Outdoor Fireplaces Project in Houston Texas  By : Jeff Halper
We agreed with this plan wholeheartedly. Outdoor fireplaces like this are much more useful in temperate, humid climates. The warmth of a fire adds relief from both cold and humidity, and the structure of a fireplace is an ideal architectural compliment to the styles of many home builds. To create this type of centerpiece, however, we would have to build a special patio that would be reminiscent of interior architecture and also complimentary to outdoor landscaping. The best way to accomplish this was to place symmetrically square interlocking pavers in a pattern that mimicked that of indoor tile.
  • Hank Gordon - Wonderful Japanese Garden Ideas  By : Hank Gordon
There are of course many different Japanese garden ideas but there are some common grounds we call the basics. One of the basic principals is that almost all design ideas will all point to nature as being the most beautiful work of art of all. The Japanese garden is always designed with nature in mind, this means the garden should always reflect the things we see in nature. When we design a yard with this kind of design it might look unorganized and wild but when we take a closer look it is often perfectly in balance, a little replica of nature at its finest.
  • Hank Gordon - Your Vegetable Garden Design Depends on Elbow Grease and Soil  By : Hank Gordon
To grow vegetables you need good soil and you can define soil in roughly three types. The first and best type of soil to grow vegetables in is loam. This type is rich of humus, dark, crumbly and soft. It holds water but it also allows for good drainage. This type is an organic matter build up from all kind of living plants, fungus and other living things that have died, decomposed and have returned to the ground. It is also very easy to dig. In this type of soil your veggies will grow like crazy.

  • Jeff Halper - River Oaks Italian Garden Design  By : Jeff Halper
We began by working on the walkway that ran from the sidewalk up to the front of the house. This walkway curved in from the sidewalk between two small stone walls and converged in a series of very small, ascending steps reminiscent of those in a staircase. This gave us an opportunity to establish an immediate sense of formal entryway by framing the front of the walkway with Agapanthus and a number of other perennial and flowering plant species that bloom in seasonal cycles throughout the spring and summer.

Dig around the plant and lift the root ball out of the ground shaking it. Once you have got it out of the ground kick as much soil away as possible. Try make it so you can see all the buds of the plant around the crown.
  • Jeff Halper - River Oaks Corner Fountain  By : Jeff Halper
The existing corner fountain was a very old three-tiered fountain structure that was common several decades ago. This is the type of fountain you almost always see in old movies. In a way it projects a certain sentimentalism about simpler, more absolutist times. However, its power as a symbol fails to convey feeling beyond simple nostalgia, and because of this its use in landscaping has long since become cliché.
  • Garet Monahan - Telling the Good From the Bad in Wicker Patio Furniture  By : Garet Monahan
The first way to judge good wicker patio furniture is by feel. Pick the piece up (if practical) and give it a gentle shake. It should feel solid, with no loose pieces. Each element (arms, back, seat, etc.) should feel tightly secured to the frame. If you feel anything rattling or twisting, the furniture is probably poorly constructed and not worth your time. (For those of us who carry a few extra pounds, we don’t like to hear the “creaking” either!)

To keep your birdbath at the correct temperature for your bird visitors to drink or bathe the whole year round you could either buy a bird bath with a heater installed or attach a heater to an unheated birdbath. Birdbaths equipped with heaters either use a cord plugged into an electric outlet or have solar panels to collect the sun's energy to power the heater. Solar power bird baths are easier to install, are cost free and need very little maintenance. They can collect enough of the sun's energy to keep your bird bath ice free even on very cold days.

When picking out plants for indoor container gardening, make sure the plants are adaptable and will be able to thrive in the conditions and setting in your house. Consider how much time you will be able to spend caring for the plants, how much light your house offers, and how much money you want to spend on your indoor garden. • Kirk Mathews - Fire Pit Care and Maintenance  By : Kirk Mathews
When you are finished using your fire pit, be sure the fire is completely out before leaving it unattended. When the ashes have cooled enough to handle, usually the following day, remove them and seal them in a closed non-combustible container. Do not start a new fire amongst the old ashes. Depending on the type of fire pit you own, you may need to do additional types of maintenance. If it is made of cast iron, you will need to coat it with vegetable oil after every 10 to 12 fires you make in it, in order to keep it from rusting.
  • Eric Gov - Choosing a Lawnmower  By : Eric Gov
First of all, assess your general lawn care needs. How big is your lawn? Lawns larger than 2 acres make a strong case for choosing a riding mower. If you have a lawn smaller than 2 acres, a riding or push mower is more a choice of personal preference. With a lawn of 2 acres and up, however, a riding mower is the way to go unless you really enjoy spending all day mowing the lawn.
  • Patrick Murray - One Last Mow...Finally  By : Patrick Murray
So as I push my now seemingly antique 7 horsepower 22” wide rusted green mower across my little patch of earth for the 4 millionth time this year I wonder if this will finally be the end. Enough already it's late October seventy degrees sunny and I'm still mowing once a week. Granted once a week is a nice change from the twice a week happenings of March through July due to a soggy wet and most cool summer.
  • Patrick Murray - Converting a Weed Garden to a Manageable Flower Garden  By : Patrick Murray

  • Joshua Safee - Tips to Ensure Your Lawn is Always Green  By : Joshua Safee
Usually it is observed that in the winters, the grass of the lawn stops growing, which may give rise to bare spots. These spots are really problematic at the time of heavy frost, but you can still maintain your lawn green by over seeding it by rye seeds. The rye grass continues to stay green in winters as well. However, in summers this grass finishes completely and dries off, leading the normal grass seeds to grow up. This way, in winters as well as in summers, you can obtain a green lawn.
  • Sarah Martin - The Geranium  By : Sarah Martin
For the pelargoniums, we are chiefly indebted to the Cape of Good Hope; the geranium is found, in some of its varieties, in Asia, Europe, and America; two of the family, our "wild geraniums," being familiar to us all as among the wild flowers of spring.
  • Sarah Martin - More on Geraniums  By : Sarah Martin
All being ready, put the drainage in a suitable sized pot. Place first a suitable crock, or a large oyster shell over the hole; then lay a few large crocks upon that, and smaller upon those, so that the drainage may occupy about three fourths of an inch.

  • Sarah Martin - The Erica and the Heath  By : Sarah Martin
The erica will not thrive unless the soil is adapted to its peculiar nature; this is often very difficult to learn, and experience must sometimes be the teacher. The soil to obtain is one of a friable nature, full of vegetable fiber. We find in an old magazine the best directions we remember to have met in regard to choice of soil. We give them entire for the benefit of our readers:
  • Sarah Martin - The Cyclamen  By : Sarah Martin

  • Janet Ashby - Setting up a Terrarium - The Basic Supplies  By : Janet Ashby
Of course the first thing you will need is a suitable container. Many different recycled containers can be used including plastic or glass bottles, fish bowls and tanks, jugs, old apothecary jars etc. Specially made terrariums come in many different designs, styles and sizes. Before you decide on the container take careful note of where it will be located and the size that will fit best. For a terrarium that will contain living creatures make sure that it is big enough when those creatures grow to full size.
  • Janet Ashby - How to Set Up a Terrarium  By : Janet Ashby
A terrarium would be a good choice if you don't have time for maintenance or if you have cats that love to nibble on your house plants! These miniature self contained mini greenhouses efficiently recycle moisture. The plants draw water from the soil which is released into the terrarium atmosphere by transpiration, condenses on the glass walls and returns to the soil. Occasional top ups are all that is needed to replace the small amount of water lost through the cap.

  • Daniel Millions - Process Of Landscape Curbing  By : Daniel Millions
Before installing the curb, one should ensure that they are comfortable with their landscaping. Ideally, if there is any leveling that needs to be done on the landscape, it should be done before landscape curbing is considered. The homeowner can do the curbing themselves, but the use of curbing professionals is encouraged if one is to have admirable results from the work. One should preplan the outline of the flowerbeds before contracting a curbing professional. The borderlines can be marked by white paint, a garden hose or sisal ropes.
  • Daniel Millions - The Beauty Of Art And Design: Landscaping  By : Daniel Millions
This is a creative art form to some people who enjoy working with their hands and don't care about getting dirty. It's a rewarding job as it leads to more jobs down the line since many landscapers get their business from past clientele who refer them to family friends and other business colleagues. This is also a field of high competition because you will have to go up against other companies who may be larger or could be a chain that works in a single state or even other places and have a larger audience they work with.

From these all the fine varieties of the greenhouses have been produced.

  • Sarah Martin - Insects and Pruning of Window Gardens  By : Sarah Martin
Is but little required. Should a branch grow out of place or die, it should be neatly cut off; and a judicious pinching does much to regulate the shape of a plant. Of course all dead leaves and old blossoms should be cut off at once. I think about how it will smell, and feel among other things. Is it going to be a focal point in a room, or mixed in as part of a theme? Will it be the centerpiece on a table, or placed in a semi-lit hallway?

So, put the sample you're using for measuring into a container and allow them to reach room temperature. Then, measure the moisture.
  • Ryan J Bell - Harvesting and Drying Sunflowers  By : Ryan J Bell
With energy expenses escalating, you might think that allowing your sunflowers to dry naturally is a good idea. But, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider harvesting them early. First, if the temperature is close to freezing during the evenings, your sunflower crops are not actually drying. The moisture is being sealed inside. But, even if you're not growing your sunflowers in freezing temperatures, there are still many advantages to an early harvest.
  • Ryan J Bell - Planting, Fertilizing, And Protecting Sunflowers  By : Ryan J Bell
Sunflower crops can usually be planted as early as April, though many farmers wait for May when the weather is warmer. The higher temperatures allows for quicker drying and an earlier harvest. When you're planting sunflowers, keep in mind that the crop output (in seeds) is often inversely correlated to seed rate (or, plants per acre). In other words, sunflower heads tend to produce larger quantities of seeds when the crop is thin. As a rule of thumb, plan to have approximately 20,000 seeds per acre.

  • Sean Duncan - Choosing the Right Saw Blade for the Job  By : Sean Duncan
To begin with, the number of teeth that a blade has will significantly affect its performance. For simply powering through large amounts of lumber quickly and efficiently, a blade with fewer teeth will be an ideal choice. A blade with around 20 teeth will tear through lumber easily. The drawback here, however, is that the cut it makes will be at least somewhat rough along the edges. On the other hand, such a saw will operate very quickly and get the job done in a minimum amount of time.

The odor that is referred to is caused when microbes don’t thrive amongst the compost. Microbes are the microscopic living organisms that convert biodegradable waste into rich organic soil. Like any living being, microbes require oxygen to exist. This happens by turning the compost. When the compost sits neglected, microbes don’t get their oxygen. The most serious problem in connection with their use is indicated in the four words above—"in the right way," for these are plants quite as effective in destroying whatever naturalness there may be as in adding to it.
